Doing Missions When Dying Is Gain

A few weeks ago, I ordered a CD with one of the most profound messages I have ever heard on it. This message was given by John Piper at Wheaton College, his alma matter, to students and staff. In this message, everyone in the room was challenged to embrace the risks of missions with the goal of spreading the gospel all around the world. I have listened to this message many times now, and each time I leave it with a deeper commitment to deny myself and rejoice in the path that God is preparing me for, even though I don’t know what that path is.

I have long wished that this message could be made available to a wider audience, as I have had to rely on an online resource for this message with no recourse should that site ever remove the sermon from their archives. I have also accepted the fact that the sermon could only be listened to through RealPlayer, one of the most despised programs on the Internet. These matters are no longer a factor though, for I have contacted Desiring God Ministries with a request to host the sermon from my own site and make this sermon available to all in the mp3 format. With that in mind, I encourage you to download this sermon and listen to it. It would be best for you to right-click on the link and save it to your computer so my own bandwidth isn’t sucked dry.

I have managed to compress the file down to 11.1 MB without significant loss to the quality of the recording. The sermon itself is 48 minutes, 49 seconds, but the time will pass quickly. This sermon is Piper at his best, and I wish the sermon was much longer. A good sermon is like a productive study in the word. It changes you. It changes your outlook on life. It causes you to want to conform to the will of God in all things. This is such a sermon. Please download it and listen to it. Please pray over the points in the sermon, that God would move your heart toward missions, whether you decide to go into the field, want to be bolder in your personal evangelism, or more trusting that God will provide for your needs as you support those missionaries who leave everything behind for the joy of the gospel message, only to look back years later and insist that they never missed a thing.

I will have to check it out.

John Piper came to our church recently for the Desiring God regional Conference. It was amazing.

If you want to see something really neat, check out the trailer for the 2005 conference. They showed it while they were there and it was unlike any other trailer that I had ever seen. I promise that you will want to watch it every morning.

The funny thing is that I can’t hear any of it. I don’t have the right encoder, I suppose. I downloaded something that said I’d be able to watch it, but could only see a few pictures.

Nonetheless, I am eagerly anticipating the conference!

I listened to the message. great message. I’m wondering as I read the heading of this site “the path of least resistance” seems to be antithetical to the message I just heard.

  5. [...] I wholeheartedly concur with Doug over at CoffeeSwirls when he says, “This sermon is Piper at his best, and I wish the sermon was much longer.” Have a listen, see what you think, and then share it with someone else. [...]
