Battling Writer's Block

11 Things to do when writer's block sets in

  1. Read a good book. I got so much content a month or two ago from Gettin' There I didn't think it could stop. Even now, I throw out a concept from the book. Words like "path" "trail" and "shortcut" are all evidence of this.
  2. Watch a movie. I really enjoyed "O Brother, Where Art Thou" but there are many others that may prompt you to write something. Soon, every blogger will be writing about the Passion of the Christ, but you could also go into the archives and talk about another movie that really had a good message. I suggest "Bruce Almighty" for a good message, even though the theology may be a bit skewed.
  3. Live a little! Do something with your family and write about it. Do you get snow where you live? Do you shovel it or play in it? If not, what wintery things do you do? Have you visited the local science center with your kids lately? What did you like? What did they like?
  4. Did the sermon at church catch your attention? Did you learn something new or was the delivery of the message unique? We'd like to know!
  5. Better yet, are you helping out in church? What are your thoughts about it? I get nervous before singing at church, but enjoy it anyway. I help out in our Awana club and have recently taken my first turn at children's church. I am also newly involved in an evolving men's group.
  6. Have you read someone else's post and you wanted to expand their idea or debate it? One little word... Trackback!
  7. Do you have any hobbies and/or home improvement plans? How's it going? What are the unanticipated difficulties?
  8. Have you heard any good jokes lately? Better yet, have you made any up? Here's one I learned from Veggie Tales. It's a Mad Lib, so it's always new, no matter how many times you tell it:
    Q. Why did the noun verb the noun?
    A. WEEDEATER!!!

    Yeah, I'm a little strange, aren't I?
  9. How's your life in regards to your reading of the Word? Why? Can you discuss any of your recent readings? What caused you to read what you are now reading? A devotional? A curiosity in a topic or section?
  10. Parallels. Always keep your eyes open for parallels. I ditched a car in the snow last week and tried to get it free in my own way. Kinda reminds you of life, doesn't it?
  11. When in doubt, you may want to try a meme, although I try to keep these as a last resort. There are some true gems out there, though. I keep links to some of the ones I've tried in my "Stuff" section at the left side of the page.
